- UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi launched Ahimsa Messenger Programme- an initiative to curb violence against women. Ahimsa Messenger is the initiative of the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development to address the violence against women in all forms through a mass movement by creating numerous Ahimsa Messengers in various parts of the country.
- The Lok Sabha passed the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011, also called the Land Acquisition Bill. The aim of the bill is providing fair compensation to people whose land has been taken away for setting up the buildings or factories. The aim of the bill is to bring in more transparency to the process of land acquisition, thereby bringing assurance of rehabilitation to the affected people.
- Kerala based Federal Bank Limited launched the electronic version of conventional passbook, called FedBook. FedBook allows the customers to download it easily as well as also install this application on the smart devices such as smartphones.
- E-commerce firm Snapdeal.com entered into a strategic partnership with Hypercity Retail to sell Hypercity’s products on its portal. Hypercity is a part of the K Raheja Group. This partnership will leverage strengths of both the companies and will deliver greater assortment to a much wider consumer base. It will lead to increased market access and higher sales for both partners.
- The former South African President Nelson Mandela was honoured with the first Lifetime Campaigner for Peace and Freedom of the Mahathir award for Global Peace while former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir received the Lifetime Campaigner for Gloabal Peace award from the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation.
- Malala Yousafzai won the International Children’s Peace Prize 2013. Teenage activist Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban militant in October 2012 after she campaigned for girls’ right to education.
- Book entitled Ghalib & His Times was released by the Vice President of India M. Hamid Ansari. The book has been brought out by the Ghalib Institute. The book portrays history through photographs and is a very valuable book for all to know the contemporary history.
- Robert Mugabe, the incumbent President of Zimbabwe sworn in for his seventh term as the President of the country.
- Tata Steel was adjudged the Best Performing Integrated Steel Plant in the country for the year 2011-12 based on the recommendations made by a Panel of Judges that selected companies for the Prime Minister`s Trophy awards for the year 2011-12.
