- Ireland’s government unveiled the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill. It explains when life-saving abortions can be performed. Moreover, it’s a clarification of rights within the ambit of Current law. The bill mentioned clearly that anyone illegally involved in abortion could face a maximum 14-year prison sentence whether he is a doctor or a patient.
- Jenita Mary Nongkynrih, A young woman scientist from Meghalaya was selected for ISRO Young Scientist Award 2013 for her urban information system project in the North East. The award for Jenita Mary Nongkynrih carries a citation and cash of 50000 rupees.
- World Press Freedom Day is celebrated across the world on 3 May 2013. The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2013 is Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media. This is the 20th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reduced the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points, from 7.5 per cent to 7.25 per cent with immediate effect as part of its annual monetary policy statement 2013-14. The reverse repo rate under the LAF also stands adjusted to 6.25 per cent. The RBI took this step to boost flagging economic growth.
- Sarabjit Singh, the Indian national and a death row prisoner in the Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail died on 2 May 2013 at the Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital in Pakistan. He was on the life-support system since 26 April 2013 after being attacked by the inmates in the jail. He had spent 23 years in Pakistani jail, after being convicted of involvement in the serial bomb blasts of 1990 in Lahore and Faisalabad that killed 14 people.
- Maryland, the U.S. state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States became the first southern US state to abolish the death penalty.
- Somdev Devvarman, the winner of two gold medals at Asian Games in Guangzhou as well as singles gold medal in Commonwealth Games in India was recommended for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award 2013 by All India Tennis Association (AITA).
- According to a Survey, the country’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, accounted for the largest number of mobile subscribers in India followed by Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.
- Understanding Bhagat Singh a book by Prof. Chamanlal was released in the on 3 May 2013. The book Understanding Bhagat Singh has tried to explain the soul or spirit of Bhagat Singh like his principle of achieving objectives with dignity, honesty and fearlessness.
- The Supreme Court of India directed that the Kudankulam nuclear plant situated in Tamil Nadu could start its operations now.
- Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that it is going to provide about 6 billion dollars loan to India over the next three years which was decided at the concluding day of the 46th annual meeting of the funding agency.
- The Environment Ministry of India decided to put a ban on the trade of peacock feathers as a measure to conserve the national bird of India- peacock. The government has no data regarding peacock population, but it is evident that the number of peacocks in India is dwindling because of poaching of the feathers which fetches good price in not just international markets, but also within Indian markets.
- India’s rising shuttler PV Sindhu won her maiden Grand Prix Gold title winning Malaysia Open women’s final.
- State of the World’s Mothers’ report 2013 released in first week of May 2013 reported that India holds the record of first day death of newborns than any other country of the world. The basic reason for the deaths of the infants of the first day as per the records of the report are the complications associated with the preterm birth, maternal health and hygiene standards.
- 500 largest companies of the US, Fortune 500 scored the near-record revenues in 2012 and retailer Walmart became the biggest profit maker on annual list by replacing ExxonMobil, according to the Fortune magazine.
- Najib Razak was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Malaysia for a second term by Malaysia’s king Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.
- First Tuesday of May is observed as World Asthma Day. World Asthma Day was observed across the world on 7 May 2013. The day is observed across the world to spread awareness and care around the world including India. The theme for 2013 is You Can Control Your Asthma and the sub-theme for the year introduced by Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) is It’s Time to Control Asthma.
- Doctors have warned that the new sexually transmitted Sex-Superbug named H041 can be much more deadly than the AIDS virus. Recently, two cases of the sex-superbug were confirmed in Hawaii. Doctors have claimed that the superbug is the antibiotic resistant strain of gonorrhea.
- National Technology Day was celebrated on 11 May 2013 as a symbol of quest for scientific inquiry, technological creativity and the translation of that quest in the integration of Science, Society and Industry. This day is also celebrated to honour technological innovations and their successful commercialization which makes fruits of research reach people at large. This year’s function is centered on the Theme Innovation – Making a Difference.
- The Ministry for Information & Broadcasting, presented the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award for life time achievement to Pran Kishan Sikand, popularly known as Pran at his residence in Mumbai
- The former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Raja Pervez Ashraf was barred from Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), of Pakistan from leaving the country over allegation of corruption in setting up the Rental Power Projects.
- National Stock Exchange, the Leading bourse launched the country’s first dedicated debt trading platform. The new Platform launched is awaiting the market regulator SEBI’s guidelines for allowing participation of mutual funds, insurance companies and pension funds. NSE had recently received approval from SEBI to launch the debt segment.
- Siddaramaiah, the leader of the Indian National Congress was sworn in as the 22nd chief minister of the state of Karnataka.
- France’s President Francois Hollande signed into law a controversial bill to legalise gay marriage. It makes France the ninth in Europe and 14th in the world to do so.
- World Telecommunication and Information Society Day was celebrated on 17 May 2013. It is celebrated on this day every year to raise awareness about the positives of Information and Communication Technologies, ICTs, among people. The day aims to make information and communication more accessible to people living in remote areas. The theme of the day this year was – ICTs and improving road safety.
- Nirbhay Sharma appointed Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
- Hotel Price Index (HPI) report of 2012 by Hotels.com revealed that the metro cities of India remain at the top most positions in the list of top 10 favourite Indian destinations for the international travellers. The national capital of India, New Delhi ranked first followed by Mumbai.
- The Pakistani activist, Malala Yousafzai was selected for UNA-USA’s Global Leadership Award called Champion for Global Change Award for 2013, in the month of May 2013. Malala Yousafzai was shot in 2012 by Taliban for promotion of girl education.
- Shashi Kant Sharma is appointed as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. Shashi Kant Sharma will succeed Vinod Rai.
- Martyrdom of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, also known as Anti Terrorism Day is observed across the country on 21 May 2013. The day is celebrated as the 22nd anniversary of martyrdom of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
- The only satellite of Ecuador, Pegaso (Pegasus) nanosatellite collided with the Russian space debris, the Ecuadorean space agency (EXA) announced.
