1) Britain’s ‘Iron Lady’ and only woman prime minister, Margaret Thatcher died following a stroke at the age of 87. She led her Conservative Party for 11 years and held office from May 1979 to November 1990.
2) J&K Bank won the prestigious FE India’s Best Banks Award-2012-13 in recognition of its strong fundamentals and dynamic growth model.
3) Executive Co-Chairman of Infosys S Gopalakrishnan has been elected as the President of the industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
4) Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, PJ Kurien elected as the Chairman of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD)on the 73rd Executive Committee Meeting of AFPPD at Bangkok.
5) Veteran Bollywood actor Pran, 92 has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The award consists of the Swara Kamal medal, a shawl and a cash prize. Pran, now 93, started his acting career in 1940 and Bollywood career in 1948w with movie “Ziddi” along with Dev Anand. In his six decade long career in Bollywood he acted in more than 300 films.
6) Nicolas Maduro is elected as the new President of Venezuela
7) Time magazine included Amir Khan in the list of 100 Most Influential People in the world for 2013. Along with him, India’s Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Delhi lawyer Vrinda Grover, California’s Indian-American attorney general Kamala Harris, Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai and US President Barack Obama have also been included in the list. Malala Yousafzai, the youngest to have made it to the list, was also featured on one of the special covers.
8) Aruna M. Bahuguna appointed as Special Director General of the CRPF. She is the first woman to be appointed for that position.
9) Sachin Tendulkar’s wax statue unveiled at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
10) Mathematical genius Shakuntala Devi, known world’s fastest ‘human computer’ died at a hospital in Bangalore following respiratory problems. She was 83.
11) Abdul Hamid, the speaker of Bangladesh’s parliament has been elected as President of Bangladesh.
12) Earth Day is observed on 22nd April to create awareness among the masses on environmental issues. This year’s theme is “the face of climate change“.
13) Sarabjit Singh continues to be in deep coma and on ventilator support at a hospital in Lahore after being brutally attacked by a group of prisoners.
14) President Pranab Mukherjee reappointed Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra for second term in the state.
15) Goa launched a digital Krishi Card for farmers to avail benefits like subsidies and loans given by the state government.
16) New York Times, The International Newspaper which had won four Pulitzer Prizes on 15 April 2013, including the award for investigative reporting for stories
17) Mahatma Gandhi who as per the 16th Annual Global CEO survey, was figured among the top three most admired leaders of the world.
18) World Intellectual Property Day was observed on 26th April. It is observed every year on the same day under the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) since 2000 and the main aim to raise awareness of how patents,copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life. The theme for this year is “Creativity – The Next Generation”.
19) Takehiko Nakao has been appointed as the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) by the Board of Governors.
20) Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways has confirmed that it had acquired 24% stake in Jet Airways.
21) Bharti Enterprises Chairman and Group CEO Sunil Bharti Mittal has been appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) . ICC is one of the world’s oldest global business organisations.
22) The Joint Parliamentary Committee on the 2G spectrum scam has given a clean chit to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram confirming that they were not informed of the change in policy by the telecom minister A Raja. The JPC report said that the 2G spectrum was allocated on ‘first come, first serve’ policy and those norms were tweaked to favor a few companies.
23) The Reserve Bank of India said that it will take action against three leading Indian lenders (ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank) as part of its probe into a website’s allegation that bank employees offered advice on evading taxes to its customers. As per RBI, Scrutiny has been done and action is being taken both in respect of systemic level and at the individual banks.
24) North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) was conferred with the Miniratna – Category – 1 status by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. NEEPCO was earlier the schedule ‘A’ Corporation. Category-I Miniratna firms can take financial decisions of up to Rs 500 crore without approval from Government.
25) MoneyGram, a global money transfer company, has renewed its agreement with India Post which owns the largest postal network in the world. As per the new agreement, it will add 2,000 India Post locations offering MoneyGram’s money transfer service in this year. MoneyGram had entered into a tie-up with India Post in September 2011 and since then the number of post offices offering its services had increased from 100 to 2500 now in 16 states.
